Analysing Conventions of Film Posters I - 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Another Round'

As part of my film marketing campaign I will be creating a poster to help advertise my film. I am going to look at a range of posters from films of different genres to see if there are some consistent conventions found on posters as a form of media. Later, once I have decided my genre, I will look more closely at posters from that genre to see if these conventions change, or are adpted, because of the genre's influence.

The first poster that I'm going to be looking at for conventions is 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

  • it has a tagline (A Fire Will Rise)
  • names of stars (surnames underneath Christian names, in capitals)
  • title of the film (largest font on the page)
  • billing block/credits (towards the bottom of the page)
  • certificate/rating (PG13)
  • production company logos (Syncopy, Legendary Pictures, DC Comics, Warner Brothers Pictures)
  • website
  • release date (July 20)
  • format (IMAX)
  • one main image from the film
  • reference to genre (through setting and costume)
The second poster that I'm going to be looking at for conventions is for the film 'Another Round'.

  • reviews and star ratings
  • social media links
  • title of the film (largest font on the page)
  • name of the director (film by Thomas Vinterberg
  • production company logo (Studiocanal)
  • additional images
  • names of stars (surnames underneath, Thomas Vinterberg in capitals)
  • certificate/rating (12A)
  • billing block
